SennaiKilangu fry/Elephant foot yam fry is a popular wedding recipe in the Indian state of Tamilnadu. we can make more recipes using yam, but this is the mandatory recipe on all occasions in the veg menu list in Tamil Nadu. this is a flavourful vegetarian side dish that goes well with sambar rice, curd rice, rasam. when we eat in marriage functions some dishes hit our mind to try in our kitchen, this recipe is one among them.

Yam- 3 cups(chopped) Garlic -Garlic Paste -1 tsp Coriander - few Cinnamon- 1 (1 inch ) Cloves-2 Cardamom-2 Cumin seeds- 1tsp Fennel seeds-1/2tsp Oil-2 tbsp | Onion-1 (chopped) Tomato -1(chopped) Chili powder- 1/2 tsp Garam masala-1 tbsp Curry leaves- few GratedCoconut 1/2cup Salt- req |
YamPreparration:
- Peel the yam skin, chop it into small pieces, wash it twice
- Heat the pan to boil the chopped yam with enough water,1tsp of turmeric powder, salt req for about 10-15 min. (until the yam 80% cooked).
- Once the yam gets cooked, smash few cooked yam pieces gently with the fingers (as shown in the picture below), allow it to cool.
- Heat a pan with enough oil for deep fry, add the cooked yam and fry it, and keep it aside.
- Take a blender, add grated coconut, fennel seeds, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, blend it without adding water, keep it aside.
Instructions:
- Take a pan to heat 1 tbsp of oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves.
- Add chopped onion, salt. cook well until onion turns glossy.
- Then, add ginger-garlic paste and sauté well until the raw smell goes away.
- Then, add the chopped tomato, sautés well in low flame for a few mins.
- Add chili powder, Gram masala, salt, mix well.
- Now, add Fried yam pieces, mix well.
- Add the ground coconut masala, mix, cook well for a few mins.
- Turn off the flame, garnish it with coriander leaves.
Serve the spicy, tasty SennaiKilangu fry/Elephant foot yam fry with boiled plain rice, SpicyPoondu kuzhambu, Simple Dal fry, Traditional Rasam!!!!
